287: Shibori-pleated organza net

SONY DSC

Today’s technique is shibori-pleating on white organza net.

Shibori is a Japanese fabric treatment that is typically used with dyes. Fabric is wrapped around a pole, wrapped with string, and compressed to create various patterns. Without the dye, the pole-wrapping results in beautiful, irregular pleats. I used this technique on chiffon for my senior collection at Pratt, but have since used it on other materials and found the effects to be just as interesting. On this organza net, the pleats are very structured, and when carefully manipulated, can create some interesting forms.
