IKEA, or God Bless the Swedes

My personal hell is lining up with a horde of people who are all going after the same thing, which is why I hate opening nights at movies, race start lines, and Black Friday. Especially Black Friday.

But I also love saving money. So this time of year, I find myself at a crossroads.

Luckily, thanks to the magic and mystery of the Internet, I usually don’t have to abandon my plans of spending the day laying prostrate on the couch. Just simply look up and click around every once in a while, and in 2-5 days, all your dreams come true, manifested as a box delivered at your door.

Sometimes, though, there comes a deal so good that you just have to pick yourself up on your atrophied legs and get yourself to the store.

Regular readers will remember from my last post that we finally became fancy adults and picked up a half dozen wine glasses the night before Thanksgiving. We paid just under $4 for the set, a price with which I was pretty content. So content, in fact, that I started thinking we should buy them for the wedding. Even at that price, they are similar to what it costs to rent glasses.

So I went on the website to see if I could order them online- and low and behold- there was a holiday sale for IKEA Family Members (their free rewards card, best known for the free frozen yogurt you are gifted upon signing up). 6 CHAMPAGNE GLASSES FOR ONE DOLLAR AND SEVENTY-SIX CENTS. Mon Dieu! AND the red wine glasses were on sale for the same price! It’s like my Thanksgiving prayers had been answered. That brought the price down to 30 cents a glass, which is roughly half the price it costs to rent stemmed glassware. Whipped into a frenzy, I grabbed Nick by the shoulders and insisted we go to IKEA first thing in the morning the next day to buy them.

And that’s the story of how we ended up with 300 wine and champagne glasses in our storage unit.
